How I work
My initial training as a psychotherapist was from a Client-Centred (Rogerian) perspective. This shapes how I am in session, especially in my empathy and in how I value your own capacity to overcome your difficulties.
My later training and interest is in Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, which I predominantly practice because it helps me build an in-depth understanding of your personality and current difficulties. I also believe in finding an approach suited to your specific needs, and may draw on Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy (REBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Systems Theory.
What to expect
- Brief, short-term and long-term psychotherapy are available, usually weekly, in 50 minute sessions.
- When working with children, I first spend at least one session with the caregivers alone to understand the presenting problem and the child's developmental history.
- With adolescents, therapy is the teenager's own private space. Parents receive an overview of what we are working towards, not the content of sessions.
My patient information document explains some of the considerations of entering therapy or counselling and gives you an idea of how I work.
“I believe it will have become evident why, for me, adjectives such as happy, contented, blissful, enjoyable, do not seem quite appropriate to any general description of this process I have called the good life, even though the person in this process would experience each one of these at the appropriate times. But adjectives which seem more generally fitting are adjectives such as enriching, exciting, rewarding, challenging, meaningful. This process of the good life is not, I am convinced, a life for the faint-fainthearted. It involves the stretching and growing of becoming more and more of one’s potentialities. It involves the courage to be. It means launching oneself fully into the stream of life.”
Beyond the consulting room
I am trained in and have experience in designing and implementing community interventions. I have specific experience in working with adolescents and with gender and LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex) activism.
